SOOC Saturday: Wild Sky

Haven't been taking too many photos recently; I don't know, I seem to be swamped with work and family, the camera never seems to make it into my hand. Back near the beginning of July though, when we were still on holidays, there was this sunset from our balcony and I took the time to take a shot. I present it here Straight Out Of Camera. I don't know, you think you'd get tired of sunsets but the variety of light and colour we get here in winter never ceases to take my breath away.

Today over at Slurping Life, Melody is talking to us Straight Out Of Heart as she too finds that life is so full and frantic that she's being forced to live it rather than document it. Stop by and check out some wonderful photographic links as well as experiencing the amazing life of this extraordinary lady.

SOOC Monday: Because Time Is Relative

Time is relative. Sometimes it's even illusory. So even though Melody hosts Straight Out Of Camera Saturday on a Saturday, I'm joining in today. Heck, I only managed Team Up Thursday on Saturday.

I'm coming to you from the bottom of a black hole today. Don't ask me why. If I had any hormones left I'd say it was hormonal but maybe I'm just caught in the seasonal slump that seems to be affecting so many of my blogmates nowadays. The temperature is dropping, we're sourcing firewood, it's freezing cold in the mornings as we get up and, unlike you northern hemisphere types, South Australians do not generally have central heating. I have a tickly cough, sore ears and a sour outlook on life.

But look, there is my baby up there. Last weekend we attended a fundraiser for Ugandan orphans, organised by a girl at our church for her personal school project. I had offered to face paint (after a long absence) and the Baby Angel had a little stall selling off some of her stuffed toys and other extraneous items. My face paints kind of got taken over by teenagers but that's ok; and these are the only two butterflies I managed. The BA chose to wear hers into her netball match later that afternoon. It was a bit like a Maori tattoo. Intimidating. Well, it must have been, cause they won :-)

I really enjoyed the face painting. I'd like to have more opportunities to practice. It's so different to what I do everyday. So relaxing and rewarding.

But I digress. My black hole. Same old same old. I'm so sick of teaching kids who don't want to learn. They almost feel as if they come in determined NOT to learn. It is pretty soul destroying and I wonder why I turned down that full time job in primary that was offered to me at the end of last year.

On top of that, we had been getting very excited about the possibility of a French exchange student. For reasons I can't fathom, the BA loves learning French. She had two years of appalling French instruction at her last school, I knew something was amiss when she counted for me
'un, dux, troys....' Unfortunately there were insufficient students interested in the language in her class and, I suspect, her poor teacher was feeling rather like me and clawing her way through each teaching day. Nevertheless, the BA maintained her desire to learn the language and has entered into it with gusto in her new school. I am filled with admiration for her attempts because she is miles behind her cohort but she gets onto Babelfish and talks to Grandad (a fluent French speaker) on the phone and generally wants to learn.

One of things she had her heart set upon was the French exchange. When we heard the cost at the outset, we knew it was a long bow; but we thought that with support from various family members, maybe she could do it. Well as life sometimes plays out, the $5500 trip to France was out of the question and so the BA's lessons in life's disappointments began. To her credit, after her initial devastation, she rallied and said she would still like to host a student here. Given the weird nature of our adopted family, I was somewhat taken aback; but after some thought we decided it was possible and we sent our forms in.

We had all been getting quite excited about the prospect of a foreign student and were only minorly shaken by a suggestion yesterday morning by email, that the student might not be a girl but a boy!! Apparently they had more girls than boys offer to host students and they were looking for a suitable family (with boys) that might be able to cope with a male student. The BA was game (disconcerting perhaps?) and we replied immediately in the affirmative.

Himself and I discussed the issues of hosting a male student and even came up with some activities we could undertake with him to introduce him to Australian life and culture (hem hem). Everyone was quite excited.

So imagine the crush as we read the email this afternoon, explaining that it would probably be unwise for us to have the male student as he wouldn't spend much time with us since he'd be at another school and thank you for your interest etc etc etc........

Rats.

I'm not sure who was more disappointed, the BA or I.

It's my 'black hole' I know but I feel like we have been rejected and I feel bitterly disappointed for the BA. Priority was given to girls who were able to make the exchange trip to France and so we were way down the list. It's even more irritating when I know there were other girls who could afford the trip but who 'chickened out'.

At the end of the day I've got to admire the BA's response. "God really didn't want me to get involved in this exchange, did He?" she said tonight.

She made me think. Maybe we would have been the wrong family. After all, the Lord is looking after those exchange students as well as us. Maybe we're the family in reserve? Sometimes families don't get on with students and a change is called for. Maybe we're the back up plan? The one thing I know is, it's ok. Its all playing out exactly the way it should.

The BA and I salved our disappointment by practising flicking teatowels at each other's legs in the kitchen tonight. The BA mastered her first ever whip like crack. Wooooow it stung!

May we all count our blessings and trust that the universe is unfolding...as it should.

SOOC Saturday: Stick A Fork In Me

Last week was the Year 10 Camp so this week for SOOC Saturday, I present you with one of our students at the end of his tether (literally).

The High Ropes course challenged the students immensely. It was 36C. There were 20m high poles with staples in the side for climbing. In groups of four the kids had to harness up, learn the techniques of 'belaying' and send one of their fold up the pole. There were a variety of activities up there, at great height; monkey ropes, postman's walk, bosun's chairs, I think that's where this lad had met his match. He was so close to the end too but he called down urgently and breathlessly, "I'm done!"

I love the 'almost silhouette' of this shot but I also love the fact that up close you can see his relieved smile as his friends lower him down.

This is Straight Out Of Camera with no cropping or editing. To see more raw shots, click over to Melody at 'Slurping Life' for SOOC.

The pinnacle of challenges on the High Ropes course was the 'Leap of Faith'. You scale the aforementioned 20m pole, stand on the top and leap for a trapeze 2 metres away! I don't think I could have done it; but my colleague did.....

SOOC Saturday: My How You've Grown

Melody's back! And with her; amazing stories, amazing words of inspiration and love, amazing photographs and Straight Out Of Camera Saturday.

Today (although it's Sunday here in Aus), I thought I'd give you this recent untouched shot of our Small Boy. He has really started to shoot up. Well, relatively, he's still the oldest yet smallest of the neighbourhood lads.

But I reckon he looks pretty dashing here, for a Small Boy.

Wish I could get him out of his bathers and into some proper shorts though......

SOOC Saturday: What I'm Doing In My Holidays

Thought I'd show you how far I have got on my quilt this week. I haven't sewn any of the blocks together yet as I am still fiddling with the arrangement of the darks. I have a lot less of the pale green fabric left so I am leaning towards this idea of a dark green/pink alternate with a random pale green thrown into every row/column. It's a bit like doing a giant suduko. Except not.

I dunno I may change my mind. Himself and I were looking at it yesterday and he was casting his designer's eye over things. We decided that I'll do 6 quares by 10 squares all up and he suggests doing something 'different' or themed at any rate, for the four central squares. Like, maybe four of the pale greens altogether although I'm not all that keen on that idea. I am also toying with one of the background fabrics which is darker than the other three and wondering whether to make it a 'dark' for some of the blocks. Maybe that could be at the centre?

If anyone has any ideas or opinions, do chip in here. I am a complete novice and open to suggestion.

Meanwhile, we have been on a campaign to find a dress for the BA to wear in the Bestie's wedding......but that's a whole other post.

SOOC Saturday: The Telephone

Did I mention I was involved with The School Musical? Well, next week we are 'in the theatre' and the pressure and job list is mounting. One of my responsibilities is to acquire props, preferably in keeping with the period of the show; in this case The Depression, circa 1933. We needed a telephone. Well, I knew exactly where to go. The BA's best friend's father is a phone-o-phile. I just knew that he would have exactly the right phone for the period. And I mean exactly!

Me: Please say no if you don't feel comfortable about this, but I was wondering if you would be able to lend us a period phone for the musical. Just a for a week. We'll take really good care of it.

Him: Hmmm. What period?

Me: 1930s, Depression.

Him: Australian or American?

Me: Well American but it doesn't really ma-

Him: Wall phone, table phone or desk phone?

Me: Errr... desk...

Him: Operator connected or dial phone?

Me: (thinks: what???????) ...ummmm, I'm not sure.....I'll have to check the script...

Him: I think I can help but I must tell you that these phones are not museum pieces, they're historical pieces but they're not in mint condition.

Me: Really, it's not a problem..

Him: hmm yes, well, they are made of bakelite which becomes more brittle with age so they can break easily if dropped.

Me: I can assure you, our stage hands are the most delightful, sensible kids(this is true). They will take really good care of it.

Him: Alright then, come and pick it up tomorrow.

When I arrived the next night, this gorgeous old phone was waiting for me along with a few apologies ("I've changed the handset to a more easily replaceable one if it breaks so it's not actually completely authentic") and a print out of a similar model being sold on ebay.

The model on ebay went for US$1325.00

So, no pressure there.

Later that day, by email, he also helpfully included dialling instructions.

SOOC Sunday: We're Just Wild About 'Not Max'

Hello!
This is baby 'Not Max'. That is because his name WAS Max....and now it's not. You know how it happens.
Anyway, the BA took this with my old PAS and as a result it is imperfect in just about every way except that you can see Not Max and he has no red-eye. Yay!
He's pretty beefy for a newborn but still easy to cuddle and the spit of his big brother, Boy Z.
Speaking of whom, here is another SOOC effort, mine this time. That's one happy big bro.
Congratulations again to A Free Family. Thanks so much for having us to tea the other night and letting us have a cuddle of your newest member. Sure beats cuddling you AFM. Hahahahahahahaha! Just kidding :-D

Melody at Slurping Life hosts Straight Out Of Camera Saturday (or Sunday). The only rules are that the images are not to be cropped or processed in any way. Click over and have a look around. Join in by all means!

SOOC Saturday: Because You Haven't Seen Him For Awhile

I don't know why I haven't taken many shots of the Small Boy lately. I think it's because he's usually off up the street with his mates or at footballl or basketball on the weekends. Maybe it's because the BA and I have been doing a lot together, without the boys....

Anyway, I took this one last weekend. He's playing for a new football team with his friend from Two Doors Up and this is his new strip.

I also took several of his socks pulled up so high they looked like tights but he wouldn't let me post those. Mind you he never said anything about not posting THIS one....What? WHAT? Oh get off my case AFM...there are no exposed body parts here and he posed for the photo after all! Quite different to the Baby Angel's builder's bum shot.

But oh my goodness. Hasn't he grown.

They do that when you're not looking.

This is a' Straight Out Of Camera' shot. Melody at Slurping Life invites you to join in sharing SOOC shots every Saturday. Go over and check some out and perhaps join in?

SOOC Saturday: Faithful Cat

This cat thinks it's a dog.

That's Himself's legs back there in the shower.

It is uncanny how much that cat loves him! I feel somewhat slighted.

Melody and the gang have more candid snaps to share over at Slurping Life. Check it out.

SOOC Saturday: Aliens Exist

For me, SOOC Saturday is the quest for the most imperfect shot which still bears some merit, even if only for snicker value. :-D

(Snapped during meal preparation a week ago.)

Others may think differently. Check it out over at Slurping Life.

SOOC Sunday: Bondi Beach

Melody does this little thing called Straight Out Of Camera Saturday (or Sunday) and as I'm about to load up a plethora of shots from my Sydney trip, I thought I'd start with this one and send you over to look at other people's unprocessed photography at Slurping Life.

I have no idea who this is but he walked across my shot of the wind blowing the spray off the wave and turns out it is good that he did! I have any number of other shots of waves and they somehow never look as impressive as they do in real life. A bit of human interest helps :-)

I had a great time in Sydney, (thanks to the BA's Dad and Stepmum Extraordinaire) and we finished off with an ANZAC Day Saturday afternoon trip down to Bondi for coffee and cake. It really is a beautiful beach. The Baby Angel had never been there before and so we walked on the sand and sat and watched the multitude of surfers hovering like sharks around the left hand break.

It's Monday here now and I am putting off the hideous but inevitable return to work. I don't even know what I'm supposed to be teaching them today *sigh*. I have a free to work it out when I get there :-(

Hope you're all doing OK wherever you are.
