Here it is. Finished. About to be demolished. It ain't perfect but he recognised it and seemed unbothered by the inaccuracies of the design.
The Bestie suggested today that I attend a cake decorating class as has another friend of ours, the Divamissal. D has a 4 year old son and a set of twins so she will be making birthday cakes for some years to come methinks; it makes great sense for her to attend classes.
For me it is different. I pointed out to The Bestie, the obvious flaw in her suggestion.
"You see if I attend classes people will start to expect great things of me. This way, if I produce something half way decent people are impressed and say things like 'and she doesn't even have any training'!!!! Why would I give that up for people to look disparagingly at my less than perfect cakes and say 'you'd never think she's done a whole course on it..'Here he is, our big 10 year old as we sing Happy Birthday for him. (I really like this shot).
And here he is blowing out the candles. (This looked better bigger).
Tonight was a BIG improvement on last year's birthday debacle. For those of you who remember, you will be pleased to know that tonight he took his bed time limit with good grace, played a quick game with his brother, had a shower and was tucked up ready for prayers without a third word (well they all need a second word don't they?).
Happy Birthday Not So Small Boy! We love you!!

Happy Birthday Small Boy!
That cake turned out great -- you did a fantastic job! Maybe you should just start decorating cakes for a living...
And to answer about the fireworks, I didn't use a tripod. But only because I didn't have one...a tripod would have been MUCH easier than trying to hold the camera still!
You outdid yourself - both with the cake and with the pictures! The cake is awesome, and the pics, well, they're awesome too!!!
Wow! That cake is awesome! I purchased a store bought, rectangular, non personal cake this year and felt ok about it. Now I feel bad.
And love the shot with all the candles. Happy bday to the big boy!
The cake looks great....I'm quite impressed!
Just take the class, and tell no one except your Beastie, of course. It'll be your little secret! And how much more could you possibly have to learn; you are already turning out such fabulous cakes! The daughter and I want to take a cake (making and decorating) class- maybe one day. I am so glad SB's birthday was much better this year...he's maturing! I followed your link to last year's story, and I could NOT believe how much he's grown in one year! WOW! Outstanding on the cake, the day, and the photos. I LOVE the one with the candles just before her blows them out. Really nice.
Happy Birthday, Small Boy!!
Ok, I have a SERIOUS apology to make- I said BeAstie and not Bestie. Um. PLEASE PLEASE forgive me, and ask your best friend to as well. I always wondered WHY you called her that. Now I know that I am the CRAZY one...I would be laughing hysterically, if I was not so mortified...
I am not dyslexic, but I OFTEN insert letters where they do not belong. I wonder if that is something similar to dyslexia...I just make up stuff, and really do not know why. PLEASE accept my most humble apology.
Also, I was going to say that I hope you enjoy the last of your days (holidays) as well! They go by so fast...hope going back to school goes well too. Can not wait to read about the new things you are going to try!
Looks great!! Very impressive.
Oh my GOSH! Look at that cake!! You did a WONDERFUL job!!!! If you ever go into the cake decorating business, let me know; I am moving down there and I will help you out! ;) haha.
Andi: Beastie....hahahaha
Melody: don't feel bad, I only do this once a year (for each kid)
Everyone else: thanks so much for your compliments on the cake. it is a real labour of love and rewarding when it turns out OK...
I love that cake!
That cake looks awecome. My sister made a Cookie Monster cake once. The blue icing was horrible. It stained clothes, and the kids ate so much they were getting sick. Blue. ugh.
Happy birthday!!! That cake is super!
Happy birthday - the cake looks fantastic - I'm sure he was more than pleased.
Great candle shot!
Hey, I expect great things from you now. I am so impressed. Send me a cake!
He is growing more handsome each day. I loved reading that it was a good birthday. :)
About Teflon brain...me, all the time.
Wow! That's amazing. Grayson is standing here talking in my ear, saying how I should make him one. "It doesn't HAVE to be a birthday to make something special. You could make it say 'Hiya' instead of 'Happy Birthday.'" We are very impressed.
And a late "Happy Birthday" to the Small Boy. :)
Oh, great job on that cake!! I agree on the whole training thing, too. ;)
As a side note, I tried to send you an e-mail to the nice comment you left me on crafty Tuesday last week, but it got rejected by your spam filter. :( In short...thanks for the comment! :)
Oh I'm so far behind on my reading - GORGEOUS cake! What in the world do you need classes for - that looks as professional as they get right there, my friend!
Anyhow - Happy Birthday Small Boy! I hope it was a great day and wishing you a terrific year, too...
Wow, that cake is amazing!! And he looks so adorable in these pictures, what a great smile he's got. :)
