Best Shot Monday: Kookaburra sits in the old gumtree...

Not a particularly good shot today but we heard this screeching and cawing outside and looked out the kitchen window to see not one but TWO kookaburras sitting on our pool fence! They seemed to be having a conversation without the usual cackling laughter one usually associates with this iconic bird.

I called for Himself and snuck outside with the PAS while he went for the DSLR with the biiiiig lens. I couldn't get too close so I had to shoot this with digital zoom and as such I was pleasantly surprised by the result.

Here's another one which is not technically v good either but he just looks so funny sitting there on our sail.

Of course, Himself got the big lens onto them and shot some things like this. Which is just showing off really.

Even after being back for 5 years, I still get excited by koalas in the gums around our place, or the sight of a pair of kookaburras!

Oh how beautiful. I love the kookaburras too. We get them in the yard sometimes but I don't have a DSLR so can never get close enough ! I have taken some good photos of them at the Australia Zoo though ... really pretty !!

laugh kookaburra, laugh, kookaburra... Gay your life must be!

My sisters and I used to sing this when we were little... haha.

Beautiful shots! I wish we had kookaburras just flying around here! I'm lucky if I get to see a sparrow. haha

I blame you for the fact that I am sitting here singing that song over and over and over again. But until today I don't know that I had ever seen an actual kookaburra! That's so cool that you had some in your backyard -- great shots and thanks for sharing!

How cool! Do you really see koalas in the trees around your house?! My son would freak out over that. He is in love with koalas right now.

Thank you for allowing me to see something I have always wanted to see! When the daughter was little we, too, sang that sweet song about the kookaburra...what a surprise to see them here. And koalas?! Honestly how amazing! It is such a treat to learn about the wildlife of other countires. Thanks for allowing all of us to share in such a special post.

merry, merry king of the bush is HE...

I had to grab Will and show him a real kookaburra, since we sing that song all the time!

We also have another about "down under" and wombats...who knew we were so musically versed in Australia?

That's pretty cool! Wish we had kookaburra's - but all we have is the song.

Thanks for all your thoughtful and kind comments this weekend. It was great to see your name splashed across my blog! You are the greatest, and the coolest Aussie I know.

So tell me, do you have fall? Are the leaves beginning to turn? Have the temps dropped?

Pretty, pretty shot.

Eating all the gumdrops he can see...

I also LOVED that song as a kid and sing it to Harrison. What fun, you have kookaburras in your backyard!

You asked if dear husband worked at Six Flags Magic Mountain (some time back - it feels.) Yes, he does, he is outside contractor that provide entertainment for Corporate parties. He loves his job.

I have no idea how I know that song. But if they test me on Australian songs for my immigration application I'll do brilliantly.

Oh, great pictures by the way!

Em was sitting next to me when I opened this page and she was so excited to see a Kookaburra! We used to sing the song all the time, but I am not sure we have ever seen one up so close - very cool!

just wanted to say I read the underwhelmed post-

hahahahhahah ... hahahahhahahahah!
I thought you were funny and I thought the girl sounded 'like, you know, american, like' and who puts a pic of themselves in a bra as their profile unless they love themselves? Anyways good stuff been going on while I'm away hope to catch up with it all soon! I had tears in my eyes too watching just the excerpt of the 'sorry' speech on the news while in Oz, I hope it was covered in the news elsewhere in the world.
